Dear SAERA community,
The SAERA committee is keen to promote engagement with our members throughout the year. As such, we are creating the opportunity for members to participate in thinking about one of our key activities. In the spirit of the annual Nelson Mandela legacy lecture, we would like to invite you to reflect on:
- What of Nelson Mandela, in his speeches, writings and actions, might have inspired your view of education.
- What about Mandela’s memory is educational as opposed to just inspirational?
We will select some reflections to publish as academic blog posts on the association website to stimulate debate, for the purposes of promoting deeper critical thinking on and about education in South Africa.
Each contribution:
- must be between 700 – 1,500 words
- will be accompanied by a short bio (40 words)
- can optionally include figures, diagrams, images
- can optionally include references and URL links
- should have 2 to 3 takeaway key points
- needs to be focused, real, authentic, and to the point.
Accepted pieces will help us to engage us with what it means for the academic and teaching project to respond to the provocation posed by Nelson Mandela and his legacy today, and how it can act as a teaching tool engaging academics, staff, students, workers, the community, the nation and the world as a whole.
We invite you to draw on the Nelson Mandela Lecture series objectives and the archive of past lectures hosted on our website and via our Youtube channel here.
We will post your piece with your bio and picture under a separate tab and under your authorship here: https://www.saera.co.za/saera-news/
Guidelines:
- The deadline for submissions is 10th January 2025
- You are welcome to provide recommendations for further reading with citations for references and links to be inserted as footnotes
- References should use the style (APA) adopted by the Journal of Education
- Submissions will be reviewed by a steering group
- You are equally invited to share your expertise and insights from a theoretical and / or practice-based perspective
All contributions need to be submitted using this online submission form
We are keen to explore ways to report on how Mandela’s legacy is engaged with today and look forward to this opportunity to open up the affordances of our digital space as a national platform to deepen and enrich our thoughts and reflections collectively this year.
Warm wishes
Melanie Luckay
